Now the Not as Exciting but Important Info:

Generally dogs love the beach and love to go on vacation with their families. There are things you can do to proactively help your pet and your entire family have a safe and stress free week or weeks on the Outer Banks.

Before traveling, ask your local veterinarian for a copy of your pet’s health and shot records.

Have a proper identification tag affixed to your pet’s collar.

Keep a current photograph of your pet with you.

Stick a piece of adhesive tape to your pet’s collar with your name, local address and phone number

Bring your dog's dishes from home, along with some favorite toys

Here are some locals rules and regs for the different towns along the OBX

Nags Head

Dogs are allowed on the beach year-round as long as they are restrained by a leash not exceeding 10 feet. All pet waste must be properly disposed of by owners.

Kill Devil Hills

Between May 15 and September 15 of each year, no dogs shall be permitted on the public beach between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. unless being used to aid a handicapped person. At all other times, dogs are not permitted on the public beaches except upon a leash and under control of owner. All pet waste must be gathered in appropriate containers. Year-round leash law.

Corolla

Leashes are required in Currituck County, but there are no length requirements.

Duck

Dogs are allowed on the beach unleashed, but as a matter of public safety and courtesy, they should be under the watchful eye and contact of their owner.

Southern Shores

Dogs are not allowed on the beach from May 15 - September 15. Year-round leash law. All pet waste must be collected immediately and deposited in appropriate containers.

Kitty Hawk

Dogs are permitted on public beaches. The owner/handler is responsible for and must remove pet waste and possess a bag/container for waste removal at all times. Dogs must be on a leash not exceeding 6 feet between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. beginning the Friday before Memorial Day until the day after Labor Day. At all other times during the year, dogs must be restrained on a leash retractable to 12 feet. Dogs may be taken off the leash only if they will not disturb other people on the beach. Unleashed dogs must be controlled by the handler, who must remain within 30 feet of the dog at all times. A leash must be with owner/handler at all times. Violation of any of these rules shall be a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of not more than $50.00.

Making memories with Bear Dog

When my wife Wanda and I decided it was time again to welcome a dog into our home, it was a tough decision between getting a young adult or puppy. It had been six or eight months since our beloved golden retriever Fluke had passed away from old age. Our children, ages 4 and 9, said they were ready for another dog. We all missed Fluke greatly but something was also missing in our daily lives – a dog. We had ideas of getting another golden and kept our eyes and ears open for one. Then one Saturday, when I was working in Corolla, the call came. A friend who worked part time at the Dare County Animal Shelter in Manteo called to say there was a beautiful, 14-month old golden named Dustin. In turn, I called Wanda and she raced over to the pound with the kids. Mere seconds late, she ended up being third on a list to get Dustin, which was truly a gorgeous dog. But as luck would have it, the next dog the kids saw was a mixed puppy named Ralph and they fell for him. So we went on a waiting list for him too. Days later, a call came that said Dustin was gone but Ralph was ours for the taking. Of course, the kids were thrilled. Wanda and I realized it was probably better for the kids to raise a puppy so they could learn how to care for a young dog. We also thought of the memories we could make. After cleaning up more than a few messes in the house, Wanda and I are getting used to the puppy we renamed Bear because of his thick black hair, short tail and stocky body. Although I still keep an eye out for golden retrievers, the entire ordeal has already been rewarding. The first day I took the dog to the kids’ bus stop, they both ran home through the front yards calling Bear, running with him and laughing the whole time. It’s a memory I will never forget. It has been too cold to go outside lately so Kadu and Bear have been hangin' out inside. They are new to the Outer Banks and seem to be fitting right in. Not too much longer and it will be beach time.

Valentines Day and Your Pet

In a survey conducted by The Iams Company, pet owners across the country revealed that they had special Valentine's plans for their pets:
-- 41 percent of pet owners plan to give their pets a special food treat

-- 19 percent will shower an extra amount of love and attention on their four-legged friends

-- 16 percent plan to surprise their pets with a special Valentine's toy
"This Valentine's Day, you won't be the only one to whisper those three little words to a furry friend," said Lara Strazdin, manager of Communications, The Iams Company. "In fact, our survey showed that 91 percent of pet owners have said 'I love you' to their pet."

Ms. Denise Humphries, Consultant Petcare Information and Advisory Service, says that pets offer their owners reliability, loyalty and affection.

"Today's lifestyles are changing and many people are choosing to be single or live alone. It is not surprising that people are turning to pets for some of the characteristics they look for in a partner" Ms. Humphries said.

While pets can provide the love and affection you are looking for, they may also help you find your two-legged Valentine. More than 58 per cent of pet owners say they have met and made friends through having pets. "Pets can act as a reason to talk to others and, therefore start new friendships or relationships" Ms. Humphries said.

Winter Tips for Your Pets

Cold weather affects our pets too ... and older and younger pets are especially sensitive to extreme temperatures.

Here are some tips to keep your pets warm and comfortable during the winter months:

Don't let them eat snow. You still need to provide fresh drinking water for them when they are outdoors. Change the water a few times a day. Don't let the water freeze.

Look at his paws before your pet comes back into the house. Remove any ice or snow packed between toes and wipe his paws.

Booties can help protect Benjy's feet from either road salt or the cold or chemicals used to deice roads. Keep in mind that Princess (your kitty) will probably not let you put booties on her!

The lower humidity and heat from a fireplace can cause dry skin, just like it does for you. To keep your pet comfortable and also help the shedding, brush frequently. This will eliminate dead hair and skin and also stimulate the oil glands.

You stock up before a major snowstorm, right? Don't forget your pet's essentials too. Canned goods, medications, etc. A pet first aid kit is always a good idea to keep on hand and these are available at pet supply stores.

If your pet is outdoors a lot, she may need to eat more than in warmer weather because she is expending more energy in the cold.

Clip the nails and trim any hair on the bottom of feet. Long nails will interfere with traction on icy patches. Hair can collect snow that turns to ice crystals.

Keep Holidays Safe for Your Pets

New plants, decorative lights, candles and colorful ornaments, plus a whole menu of delicious smells - the holidays must be a puzzling yet amazing time of year for pets. But to a curious creature, these good things can be hazardous and painful. Electrocution, intestinal blockage and bleeding, frostbite, cuts, scrapes, burns, and poisonings occur more often during the holidays than any other time of year.

For a safe and happy holiday season, keep these safety tips in mind:

Avoid tinsel and glass ornaments or decorations made from food. Tinsel can cause intestinal blockage; broken glass ornaments can cause cuts or, if eaten, intestinal bleeding; and ornaments made from dried food can be poisonous for pets.

Keep fallen tree needles, real or artificial, cleaned up.

Cover your tree stand so pets cannot drink the water, especially if you add any type of tree preservative.

Unplug lights when you leave home. Pets could get shocked or even electrocuted chewing on cords.

Don't feed pets poultry bones or leave bones uncovered and accessible. They are brittle and breakable and cause intestinal bleeding if eaten.

Don't feed pets holiday foods that are rich and potentially toxic. This list includes chocolate and alcohol, plus foods such as potato latkes, gravies, and poultry skin, which can cause gastrointestinal upset.

Keep poinsettias, mistletoe, and holly out of paws' reach - they're poisonous if eaten.

Place candles out of reach or playful paws and wagging tails.

Watch for flying embers from the fireplace; keep pets from getting too close to burning fires.

Road Trip!

Time to head to Grandma's for Thanksgiving? Or are you going to Aunt Maude's house this year?

Either way ... it is a road trip and that means that the family pets are traveling with you. The packing is done, the cooler is ready, you have the route all planned out. Get the kids in the car, settle in, seat belts on and away you go.

Wait! Is Benji buckled up too? How about your precious cat, Princess ... is she in a carrier?

All the passengers in your car should be restrained while traveling, even if it is just for a short trip to the grocery store to pick up that forgotten whipped cream for the pumpkin pie.

Some facts:

Three quarters of occupants ejected from a car during a carash are killed. Seat belts are the effective way of preventing serious injuries or even death
An unrestrained pet is also a danger to other passengers, especially children. In a 30 mph crash, a 60 pound dog can hit the windshield, seat back or another passenger with a force of 1,200 pounds.
Even if the pet is not injured, a frightened and unrestrained pet can hamper the efforts of the police, firemen or rescue workers who are on the scene.
A cat or a dog moving around in a moving car is a big distraction.

The Humane Society of the United States advises that the best and safest place for a pets traveling in a vehicle is either restrained in the back seat or cargo area or, if you have a small cat or dog, placed in an appropriate carrier. Don't use a standard seat belt for you furry family members. There are many restraint devices designed especially for pets of all sizes. Carriers are especially important for cats who we all know like to perch on shoulders, curl up around your feet and jump from back to front. That is a disaster waiting to happen.

So, before you begin that next road trip stop by the pet store and pick out the right restraint for your dog or cat.

Aboard the Lazy Lucy
The fall is a wonderful time for an evening stroll along the Manteo Marina boardwalk. This particular stroll happily culminated in an invitation to Appletinis and assorted imported cheeses pour moi aboard the Lazy Lucy with Scott and Debbie Hershey (pictured at left). My buddy Carl, the dockmaster, was both bartender and photographer. Docked several berths away was an unusual 1920s-ish sailboat on her way to the Caribbean and captained by a duPont. Life along the waterfront is always interesting.

I must say, I've since tried stopping and staring at other boaters while they're enjoying cocktails and hors d'oeuvres aboard their boats, and it hasn't resulted in any other invitations to come aboard! It worked with the Hersheys. Perplexing. I must work on my technique!

In an earlier blog, I alluded to a deep-seated obsession with catching a squirrel--any squirrel. I promised to tell you about my first Halloween and a squirrel so fiendish, an act against a 7-month-old puppy (me) so heinous, that...well, I have recurring dreams of retribution...

SQUIRREL CRIMES TRIAL

NUTTENBERG. The prosecution called to the stand the 47th and final canine witness to testify in this sensational case that has pitted dog against squirrel in the courtroom with explosive allegations that led to charges of abusive taunting while eluding capture, unlawful flight up trees, chattering nonsense with the intent to enrage, and nut-to-cranium mischief. The much-awaited testimony of Meg, a Westie from Manteo, tugged at the heartstrings of the jury, if only because of her tender age at the time of the alleged crime.

"Describe for the jury the events of that fateful morning nearly 6.5 years ago," Prosecutor Molly Spaniel prompted softly.

"Well, ma'am, it was the morning after my very first Halloween..." Members of the jury and courtroom observers were heard gasping, clearly remembering their own exhausting "first Halloween" experiences as puppies: the smells, the noises, the short, scary people milling about outside, the repeated door knocking, the constant handing out of perfectly good treats!

"Order in this court!" Judge Boxer demanded. "Continue with your testimony."

"Yes sir. I was recovering in my front yard, lying in the grass, and the house was secured to my collar by a 10-foot leash when I smelled something flash close by me. I scrambled to my feet. Turned toward the smell. And there...there he was..."

"Do you need a moment, Meg?" asked Ms. Spaniel.

Meg shook it off, indicating she wanted to go on. "The squirrel was standing on the low wall, just inches beyond the reach of my leash! He knew he could do whatever he wanted! He knew I was helpless!

"I began crying, gut-wrenching sobs, like any heartbroken puppy would! The squirrel began swishing its tail to and fro, walking slowly back and forth along the wall, taunting me to do something! To catch him if I could! I was straining to reach him. I just wailed louder because there was nothing I could do. My peep came running and just as she got there, that's when the squirrel did it!"

"Did what Meg? Tell us," she urged gently.

"Unwrapped a Kit Kat bar and ate it in front of me!"

Totally true story. My peep saw it, she can tell you.

I WILL NEVER FORGET.

It is my mission to keep the squirrels off the waterfront. Ever so often I'll see one trying to sneak across the bridge from Festival Park and I'll lock it in a laser stare that causes it to freeze and then turn and run back across the bridge. I am watching. I will never forget.

OBX Beach Boxers Workin' Off The Halloween Treats!

Last week the OBX Beach Boxers, Kody and Daisy, were getting a nice work out at the oceanfront ... 71 degrees ... light breeze ... lovin' the Fall Outer Banks weather!

The weather stayed nice through the weekend, too, for the 2009 OBX Marathon, Half Marathon, 8K, Fun Run & 5K events. Of the more than 6,500 participants this year all were two-legged, but it's safe to say there were some four-legged furry fans cheering on the runners along their route! Tails On the Waterfront

You've probably been wondering where I've been. Me too. I was whisked away without a word of explanation. Long story short, my peep and I went to Cape Cod to visit with the rest of our pack. The photo at the top left shows me (squint real good) on the beach at Hyannisport and the photo at the bottom right shows me being tackled on the beach in Eastham. Yeah, I was tackled for my tennis ball because I out ran him every time! I may have little popsicle stick legs but I can fly like a bullet!

Now I'm back patrolling the Manteo waterfront. Tourists still trickle in but it's quieter on the streets. The real action right now is at the marina. All these big beautiful yachts working their way down to Florida or the Caribbean go out of their way to spend a night or two at our marina. Word gets around, ya'know. Peeps appreciate my twice daily patrols (and Carl does some stuff, too).

The weather has been tres annoying recently--rainy and cool--notice my foul weather patrol gear below. But no hurricanes this year, not even a tropical storm! Yee Haw! So I can take a little

rain, no problem. My foul weather patrol gear (please refrain from calling it "an adorable little slicker") protects me very well. The big problem comes in, as I discovered during Tropical Storm Ernesto, when it floods and the water is way over my head and there is NO DRY GROUND on which one may do one's toilette! Horreurs! My peep very graciously carried me-- slogging through calf-deep water, howling winds and horizontal sheets of rain--several blocks, until we found a concrete planter that had some dirt in it and...well, relief. A girl learns a certain way to do her business and this may never vary.

Word has it that there's a new girl on the docks named Ruby, a chocolate Lab puppy, adopted by Kim2. You know how everyone oohs and aahs over Lab puppies...so I admit I had a fleeting moment of wicked mean jealousy. The adulation of the tourists is an ambrosia I find painful to share. I've become so shameless (I admit it!) in my bid for attention from total strangers that this summer I sat down smack dab in the middle of the boardwalk (while my peep was deep in conversation nearby), facing oncoming foot traffic and forced people to either walk around me or pet me. Guess which occurred most often? Enough with the confessions! Anyhoo, my conniving little mind realized that by the time the tourists are back in full force Ruby won't look like a puppy anymore, she'll just be another Lab and I'll still look like I'm right off the shelf at Toys R Us! Ooooh, I'm so bad, tee hee! So here's a message for Ruby (ok, you had to know this was coming): Rooo-oobee, don't take your love to town...at least not until June!

I received this email today from another Outer Banks local and wanted to pass it on.

"Two weeks ago, we found a German shepherd dog in Richmond's Chimborazo Park. Although he's as tall as my waist, he weighed about 50 pounds and you could easily see every rib. Most disturbing were his wounds: the vet said that she believes he was used as a bait dog for dog fighting due to the many injuries across his face and the open sores around his left leg, where he had been restrained while fighting dogs were encouraged to lunge at him.

In the past couple of weeks, "Otto" has had treatments for worms and fleas, plus antibiotics for his injuries. He's been neutered and he's gained about 10 pounds. Best of all, he's been loved by us and by all of our four-legged pack as well. He's a really good dog that must have been in a loving home at one time, for he's sweet, trusting and well trained. In posting his information on lost-and-found sites I've received heart-breaking e-mails from people all over whose own pets were lost or stolen from their yards. Here's where I need your help...

Tango and Gulliver, my English setters, are entered in the "Cutest Dog Competition" in honor of their friend Otto. They have until October 17th to collect votes and you may vote once a day. Bad Day!

My day started really good umm mean hello - it's Friday! Yay! But then my day was quickly ruined...my Dad got out the leash and I was so hyp'd for a walk. Unfortunately we got in the car instead hmmm I was confused are we going to swim? going to doggie day care? maybe somewhere awesome I don't even know about? Well we dropped off "the diva" at doggie day care and I stayed in the car hmmm this is bad. I rode with my face in the wind for like 20 minutes and then I got a wiff of the worst place on earth - THE VET!! This is when I felt my stomach churning and panic set in.

When my name was called I tried to hide under the bench but Dad pulled me out. They take me to this room to weigh me (ouch), I tried to make a run for it but no...then the needles (screaming on the inside) and after all that they think a biscuit will make up for all this torture! You have got to be kidding me! The only apology I'll accept for this deception is swimming and maybe a tennis ball. We shall see. I don't forgive that easy!

Yup that's me Emma. I'm a high maintenance yellow lab who loves to swim and a tennis ball. My parents take really good care of me and my sister "the diva." Since the weather is cooling off the pool is closing at doggie day care and I don't know what to do sniffle, sniffle. Swimming is my life and running around the pool chasing the tennis ball is glorious! I guess someone thinks the pool is getting too cold but I think they are wrong - bunch of haters. Rumor on the street is doggie day care is adding a pool heater next spring and I can't wait. Looks like swimming in February woot!

A "Wave Tail" Tale | Surf Doggies Beware!

Anyone with a dog who loves the ocean should know about "wave tail" and how common this injury actually is.

Happy-go-lucky and ready-for-anything Bella, a beautiful 7yr old Retriever/Lab mix who frequents the Barnes St. beach access in Nags Head, was in the ocean over the Labor Day holiday as usual. Bella had a fab vaca-day of swimming and relaxing, but the next day, and for several thereafter, she seemed to be in pretty serious pain in her back side. Was it her hips?... her knees?... Dr. Pam at Nags Head Animal Hospital knew right away what poor Bella was suffering from.

Sprained tails are actually fairly common at the beach. There are lots of "wave tail" visits on Monday mornings at the vet clinic from Labs frolicking in the surf over the weekend. It happens when a wave gets them from behind and forces the tail to bend forward ... Ouch!

Miss Bella is doing much better now after a round of steriods and pain medication. No swimming for a whole week. :( Just one of the hazards of being an OBX surfer girl doggie!

Here's me and my buddy, Skeeter, watching some early morning shenanigans on the Manteo waterfront...there's always something. One morning, a couple of winters ago, there was this crazy dog--I thought it was a dog--in the water. It would swim up to the edge of the dock, I would peer over the dock (but very carefully with all legs splayed in case I needed to break into a commando crawl), and the dang thing would swim backwards real fast! It was teasing me! Now, I don't usually bark (just at bad commercials), but I barked at him. He just wasn't right. Dogs don't do the back stroke!

Well, it turns out it was an otter! And there were three of them. For a couple of early mornings, I'd see them lounging on a floating dock. I didn't take my eyes off of them while I passed by but they knew better than to tangle with me.

Anyways, I have a lot of friends I see most every day on the waterfront--Psi (I thought he was my boyfriend, but that's another post), Mikey and Tobey, Max, Charlie, Bear, Mango, Bo, Trooper, Abby (who's really a Rottweiller in a Yorkie costume) and Oliver. And then there are other friends who come to visit regularly from as far away as Charlottesville and Pinehurst, like Skeeter, Callie (see above, shameless hussy but I like her anyways), and Mr. Chips, Annie and Duncan. We have a grand time in the park and on the docks, running and chasing each other, digging holes in the sand or just lounging together in the sun! Having friends to play with is just the best!

I don't know their back stories nor do I know if they appreciate (wouldn't be hip to ask) how lucky they are to have grown up on the Manteo waterfront or to visit regularly. Until I was almost two years old, I lived in the big city. Thinking back on it, city dogs have it pretty tough. I had to walk my peep on a leash all the time, cars and noisy buses roaring by, I never met any of the other dogs on my street because we were all kept in fenced-in yards, the local park had "No Dogs" signs posted, and the only wildlife I ever saw were squirrels and pigeons! Did see a dead rat once--freaked out the peep big time! Super fragrant! Hey, I gotta remember this Halloween to tell you the Big City Squirrel Post-Halloween story--early traumatic life event that totally explains my fierce determination to catch me a squirrel over at Festival Park!

Sooo, we're all so lucky blah, blah, blah...where was I? You've probably heard of Yappy Corner, right? Well, if you have a dog that likes to swim you have. Yappy Corner overlooks the Dog Beach. See photo from last winter--yeah, yeah, the red speck on the beach is me. Laugh all you want, but I'm toasty warm in my fleece jacket when the wind is whipping across that water!

In the summer, peeps hang out on the benches while their dogs splash around in the water. My buddy Skeeter rules Yappy Corner. Moi? Non cheri, I don't swim--again, a story for another post.

Skeeter's pretty intense. Once, when I hadn't seen him for awhile, he was at Yappy Corner and spotted me coming toward him across the footbridge over the beach. He started running toward me but decided to take a shortcut--by going airborne off the footbridge!! Dropped like a rock. You know, it's good to be a girl ;-)

A warning from our friend Coal for all four-legged first-timers to the Outer Banks ... By the last day of your pup's OBX vacation, expect them to be transformed into a totally wiped out & lazy--calm/submissive Ceasar Milanesque--completely content canine! Even their favorite terrorized toy will get a nice respite with all to do here away from the rental home! :)

You know how when you're chasing birds you get in the zone? So focused you don't realize you're about to run right off the edge of the cliff? Uh-huh, that's right, just about happened to me right here. Let it be a lesson to you: big birds are soooo wily! You think that was a coincidence that their escape path went right over the end of the dock?

Mucho happenings on the Manteo waterfront this week! My personal favorite: About 6 p.m. every summer evening both the Downeast Rover and the Dolphin Watch boats (sitting side by side) load lots of passengers for their evening cruises. So there're lots of peeps milling about. (I'm off leash when we're on the boardwalk since my peep doesn't seem to need as much help walking back there--I think she's afraid of cars--but I do keep an eye on her and never get more than 10 to 15 feet away.) So here comes me and my peep weaving through the crowd. There's a flat ramp to board the Dolphin Watch. The passengers are seated. The guy on the microphone is yakking away. Passengers are attentively listening. I see an opening. I run for it. I board the boat! Right under the noses of the ticket-takers! Tail up and waving and with a big grin, I do a victory lap around the boat and run right back off the boat! The passengers are laughing, the ticket-takers are laughing, my peep's laughing. The guy says "nobody heard a word I said!" Yee-haw! Exhilarating!

I'm tellin' ya, this place is a DisneyWorld for dogs!

Speaking of which, here's an alert for you local dogs: there's a BIG, juicy, stinky fish head decomposing under the foot bridge that crosses the Dog Beach (that's right, a dog beach!) by Marshes Light condos. Canine eau de sushi. Dig in and roll, baby! Cause a high tide could take that delicacy away! I rolled in it. I stunk so bad I swear there were clouds of stink just undulating as I strutted the remainder of the patrol. You guessed it, I was rudely snatched up, deposited in the kitchen sink, robbed of my snazzy collar and pirate bandana, and doused with foul-smelling dog shampoo. She can't take my memories away though.

Word got around about last week's cheese curl bonanza at the Saturday morning Farmers Market. Here's the evidence:

So many dogs came out! I hope they got lucky like I did with the cheese curls, cause unless improvements are made soon, we're going to end the season--once again--with just plants and vegetables being offered at Farmers Market! What about us? Oh, Puparazzi Lisa wherefor art thou?

Coming up this week: First Friday in downtown Manteo. It's crowded, it's exciting, there's live music...there's food being dropped everywhere!

Next week is my perennial second favorite event (WAY more food being dropped at Dare Day): the two-day art show that just covers the waterfront. Gotta do a lot of bobbing and weaving on my patrol because of the crowd but I'm nimble and it keeps me alert!

Warning! All discerning dogs: There is absolutely nothing of interest for you at Manteo's Saturday morning Farmer's Market! The peeps love it, but it's mostly locally grown vegetables (yuck), plants and flowers (yawn), doo-dads and crafts (huh?), and once I did get a whiff of what might have been homemade banana bread but the peep behind the table had it wrapped so tightly in plastic you'da thought our national security depended on that secret.

Now, don't get me wrong, it's always good to be in the park on any sunny morning. But 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays--what's in it for me? Love all the people, but not one of 'em is paying any attention to me! (Except Bettie Blanchard who took that first darling photo of me and my peep.) They're all oohing and aahing over vegetables or standing in line to buy a plant. Hello?

Last Saturday morning though something happened that really goes to prove that there's a silver lining in every cloud. A tragic accident turned into a jackpot for me! Some klutzy kid dumped maybe half a bag of cheese curls under a picnic table--no doubt he wailed at the loss of these golden nuggets (tee hee). Shortly after noon, as I began my second patrol of the day, olfactory diligence paid off: I scarfed up these delectable morsels as my peep stamped her feet and made frantic noises "Meg, blah, blah, sick, blah, throw up, blah, blah!" Which, of course, as you well know, this kind of reaction from the peep just proves how really, really good this stuff is! I just got to it before she could--pure jealousy.

She was still huffy about the whole thing during the third patrol of the day when I had to eat a lot of grass. Standing there shaking her head. Well, shoot, my tummy hurt. Awash in such negativity, I couldn't even eat my dinner that night. I felt a whole lot better after I "returned" the grass to the park.

So, the Farmer's Market isn't a total loss, and I'm not saying you'll get lucky as I did, you just have to keep your nose to the cheese curl, er, grindstone and be ever so vigilant.

Ok, speaking of vigilant, I need to thank the concerned Manteo citizen who sent me the picture that proves what Carl, the dockmaster, does when I'm not around (see my last post):

Dog Art

I had the pleasure of meeting an artist the other day...which is always a treat since I am an art lover.

Hilda Spain-Owen is the artist I am talking about. She is a friend of a friend and was delivering a commissioned portrait of two Portuguese Water Dogs.

From her website:

"Hilda Spain-Owen’s art is primarily single-subject driven work, animal or human. It is about bold sizes, bright colors, and unique texture. The subject fills as much of the canvas as possible. Spain-Owen leaves the background abstract, further pushing the subject forward. Contrast, thus interest, is again enhanced by keeping the lines of the subject drawing realistic while choosing colors that are impressionistic. Further impressionism comes from the texture achieved by using a palette knife and layering high viscosity paint. The result...you are tempted to reach out and touch it.

Spain-Owen's art works well in all venues, traditional to contemporary. Those with traditional taste who collect her giclées often frame them with double mats and ornate frames giving them an old world feel.

Early on, working toward what pleased her contemporary taste, she arrived at her distinct style. When she began painting her own whippets, she grasped the importance of painting what you love. It was through the painting of these small, graceful sighthounds that the exploration of line, color and texture showcased her talent.

Her following is comprised of a mixture of sighthound owners, dog lovers in general and even those who do not own dogs. From the start of her career, it was apparent that the appeal of her art went beyond the boundaries of the subject. Her work has been shown in galleries in Florida, Alabama, North Carolina, Delaware, and New York and is in collections across the United States.

Spain-Owen works to support sighthound rescue groups by donating original works for auction. Through her donations, rescue groups in Florida and North Carolina have raised thousands of dollars to help with adoption and medical costs associated with sighthound rescue. "

I went to her website to see more of her work because I was truly impressed, even though I do not even own a dog. I know, strange huh? I write a dog blog...no dog. Anyway, her work is colorful, fun and funky and I loved it.

In fact, I called my good friend, who owns a Corgie and told her about it and she is going to get a portrait of her dog done by Hilda.

Hey! My first blog posting…liberating!

Yeah, maybe not…they kinda buried my photo three pages in (not my best angle anyways), and I’m famous around here, dang it!

Well…more so in Manteo where I rule the boardwalk! I live at the waterfront and patrol the entire boardwalk twice a day, three times a day on the weekends. Increased patrols are essential on the weekends since all those boaters bring in their clueless dogs. The dockmaster, Carl, handles the boaters while I require their dogs to pass the smell test and a brief “chase me” exercise—separates the wheat from the chaff, know what I mean? I have to project an air of supreme confidence, so I do strut around, but really I’m a pushover. I love the excitement of all the people coming to visit me, er, Manteo. It’s a Smell-O-Rama out there. And half of ‘em are dropping French fries right and left!

Here’s my take on my job: Love the tourists! Gotta keep an eye out for their dogs though! This ain’t Fresno, Fido! You may not need protection back in the ‘hood, but there are bloodsucking ticks and mosquitoes here that are gonna wipe that goofy grin off your face. And playing in the surf? Rip currents can take you for a magic carpet ride too you know. Go ahead, take a big sniff of that crab!

So here’s the takeaway lesson: Come to the beach! Come to my boardwalk! We love you here! But “bone” up (ha! pun intended) on what it takes to run with the big dogs here on the Outer Banks.

The folks a Pixar Studios have come up with another great animated movie out now in theaters called Up. Go see this movie, not only because it's getting rave reviews, but also because there are some flat out hysterical scenes with dogs. (I think the last time I laughed that hard in a movie theater was when I went to see Liar, Liar) It won't be funny if I try to describe the hilarity of the dogs in Up here, so just trust me... go see this movie. You'll laugh, you'll cry, and it will make you want to rush home to your own happy, silly, lovey puppy-dog and give 'em a big hug, a new tennis ball and extra treats! ;-)

Clean Floors and Happy Dog

I wish I’d done this 10 yrs ago!... A planter for a water bowl. Yes, a planter! I’ve always had boxers which means I’ve always had a wet mess around their water bowls in the kitchen. If you have a big dog, you probably know exactly what I mean. The towel under the bowl that’s perpetually soaking ... Trying rubber mats but in a few days they just seem damp and icky, too. So the kitchen never feels completely clean. The way my dogs get water, I’d just watch the splash kicking back from the bowl, dribbling down their paws and all over the floor. On the bright side, I always know which way my floor is leaning! J Oh, and how about the doggy slurp-and-turn-the-head-to-walk-away move which just drags the now sandy slop-water down the outside of the bowl and across the floor? Like that crack up tidy-bowl cartoon commercial with the scrubbing bubbles says: “eeewhoo”

So I had the idea of a planter deep enough to keep the “shower” inside the bowl. The one I picked is actually working! Check out the photos. No wet funky towel on the floor. Nice and clean – and dry! Yay! Hint: Get a planter withOUT a hole in the bottom – HA!

I was surfing the web today before I got ready for work and came across an article on MSN.com about favorite pet names.

Seems like the Veterinary Pet Insurance people, which insures over 466,000 pets, went through their data base to find the most popular and most unusual name for pets.

The company employees selected 50 unusual names and then voted for the top 10 for both cats and dogs.

The names are below in order from 1-10. (Animals not insured by VPI were not included in the survey). Fun stuff! I think naming your pet something really weird is perfectly fine and even appropriate. Naming your kid after a piece of fruit or an infamous person in history is not. Why do people do that?

Water Dog...yes. Duke loves the water, anywhere, any time.

Duke lives in Maryland and likes to vacation in Kill Devil Hills every year.

He is a chocolate Lab and belongs to Will, who is the brother of a favorite co-worker.

The Outer Banks is such a dog friendly place ... many shops and even activities planned around and fun our furry friends. My friend visited here recently after having moved to VA Beach from California and was worried that Gator, her Yorgie, would not like it here but he kicked back and had a great time. So did she, of course ... this is the Outer Banks after all and once you cross that bridge, the stress levels get much lower.

Lost Then Found

Once again, one of our staff members has proved that the Outer Banks is the home of many wonderful and caring people.

Holli is a reservationist in the Village Realty Corolla office. Her drive to work takes her north on Route 12 from Kitty Hawk to Corolla. On her drive in this morning, while going through the town of Duck, she spotted a small dog crossing the busy road without the benefit of a leash or a person at the other end of it!

Although many cars were going around or otherwise avoiding the Beagle, Holli decided to stop, even though it was probably going to make her late for work. This concerned her greatly, but we are fortunate to have a rental manager who is also a caring person, so when he learned the circumstances, he was quick to excuse her tardiness.

Anyway, the little dog had a collar on with a tag – with an address in Kill Devil Hills. Holli immediately tried to call the owner on her cell phone, but only was able to reach an answering machine. Not knowing what else to do, she loaded the dog in her car and drove on to work. “Little Miss Beagle” was happy to join us in the Corolla office for the day and was a good girl. This was a good thing as we just had new carpet installed last week. Holli made several calls to the number on the collar throughout the day, again only receiving the answering machine.

By this point, it being a holiday weekend and many of the resources such as animal rescue groups and veterinary hospital being closed, Holli pretty much resigned herself to a weekend house guest and even purchased dog food for the sweet girl. Finally, about 2:30pm, she received a call from a gentleman who identified himself as the person who was babysitting for “Little Miss Beagle”. It seems her mommy is away for the weekend and he was kind enough to care for her at his home. However, when he put her out in his fenced-in backyard, she somehow did a Houdini act and escaped.

Well, can I tell you the relief on this man’s face when he came to pick her up? He apparently had been frantically searching for her most of the day, despite the fact that he just opened a new restaurant in Corolla named Uncle Ike’s. We didn’t catch his name but I can assure you Uncle Ike is a happy man this afternoon. Oh, and by the way, Little Miss Beagle’s real name is “Dixie”. Kudos to Holli for being the person she is!

Dogs Welcome

Every now and then I like to feature some of our dog friendly vacation rentals and today is one of those days.

Las Brisas is gorgeous and also is located in The Currituck Club in Corolla. The house features a private pool and is running specials on all remaining weeks.

Southern Paws is also in Corolla and has a private pool. One standout feature is the view of the private lake in Ocean Sands.

The Bates Motel in Corolla Light is smaller, 3 bedrooms, and this community offers some of the most activities and amenities on the entire Outer Banks.

I expect to see a lot of pets and their owners on the beach this weekend. The weather is going to be great and we officially kick off the summer season here.

Counter Surfing on the OBX

Ever wonder what your dog does while you are out of the house? Sure you do, and so did my co-worker. Every day when she got home from work she noticed that something from the sink was on the kitchen floor.

So, time for the "canine cam" ... and here is what she found.

Lola and Henry's

On a recent Sunday morning one of my associates went to Henry's Restaurant in Kitty Hawk for breakfast. This is her post:

I went out with my family for breakfast. My old boxer Lola, who always loves a car ride, was especially convinced that she was coming with us. I couldn't resist her exuberance at the front door even as I was planning to just slip out and leave her behind. I smiled at her saying, "all you'll do is sleep in the back seat for an hour in the cold, silly. Why not stay home and sleep on your cozy bed by the window in the sun?" Fat chance! It must have been the inflection in my voice--that questioning pitch that makes a dog's head cock to the side and ears perk up. She'd won the stand-off and was out the door, down the steps and jumping at the side of the car before I was past the screen porch. She's so happy riding down the Bypass with her face in the breeze, not giving a hoot whether she'll actually be getting out of the vehicle at its final destination. She just doesn't want to be left behind.

So, we get to Henry's parking lot. I leave the windows cracked and give her the familiar "stay and be good". Then, as we walk toward the restaurant we all get such a chuckle noticing that almost everyone there also brought a dog or two. Some were mellow and sleepy-looking, like Lola, and some were rowdy, barking at the dogs in the cars parked next to them. But all were focused on the large windows at the front of the building, waiting patiently to see their 'humans' coming back out to the car--reuniting the pack. I wonder how many lucked out on the ride home with doggie bag leftovers... a little bacon, maybe half a sausage patty.

Poor Lola, her 'mom' is a vegetarian. At any rate... apparently Henry's in Kitty Hawk is the place to head for breakfast with man's best friend. Just be sure to leave your four-legged cuddly shadow in the car. They'll have plenty of canine-watching fun to keep them entertained while you enjoy a tasty plate of hotcakes.

Pet Friendly Vacation Rentals

When I was an Owner Liaison for two different real estate companies one of my duties was to meet with potential owners and answer any questions they had, go over our policies and procedures and hopefully sign them up.

One of the most important decisions they had to make was whether to allow pets or not. Some owners who had pets themselves agreed to make their vacation home "dog friendly" and some, even though they will usually bring their dog with them when they come here, do not want to allow pets.

It was my experience that dog friendly homes did not have any more damage than non-pet friendly homes and since most pet owners want to bring their dog on vacation with them ... pet friendly vacation rentals are very popular.

There is almost no damage a pet (or a human) can do to a home...short of burning it down ...that cannot be repaired. Quite a few owners provide treats for their furry guests and make sure that they leave notes for their guests about good places to walk their dog, pet friendly locations and so on.

Pet homes are so popular that we even launched a website dedicate to Pet Friendly OBX Rentals only, and it has been very well received.

Nowadays you can find pet friendly accommodations on the Outer Banks of almost every size and type and price range from a luxury condo on the oceanfront to a large estate on the soundfront, golf course or oceanside.

I do not own a dog but I did want to find out which are the most popular breeds in the USA. I "googled" that term and found this site:

Adopt Me

If you are thinking about getting a pet please consider adopting one from your local shelter or SPCA. Many pets are abandoned each year and unless someone takes them home ... well, we all know what happens to them.

Once an animal gets to the shelter, for whatever reason, they are cleaned and the volunteers make sure their shots are up to date, they are spayed or neutered and they also check out their temperment.

My daughter recently adopted two cats over a two week period...both from the SPCA ...and both of them have fit right into her household very nicely.

Pet Friendly Outer Banks

Most people prefer to bring their dogs with them on vacation instead of boarding them... because Barkley likes the beach too. The Outer Banks is a very pet friendly place, just remember to obey the leash laws here.

Some Tips:

Heat Prostration
Every summer we see several animals that become seriously overheated. This is a potentially life threatening condition which can be easily avoided. It is important to remember that our canine friends cannot perspire as we do, so they rely on panting as the chief way to dissipate heat experienced by their bodies. In order to compensate for this one should always have fresh water available. Exercise should be limited to short intervals with close attention paid to their breathing patterns. When staying at the beach for extended amounts of time, give them a place to lay in the shade. Breeds of dogs with shorter snouts or those with a history of respiratory or cardiac problems are even more sensitive to the effects of heat. Remember that even on overcast days it is possible for dogs to overheat in short periods of time. Finally, never leave your pet unattended in parked vehicles.

Salt Water Ingestion
While romping at the water's edge, some dogs will drink salt water as if it were fresh water and in large amounts this can be dangerous. The most common effect of this is vomiting and diarrhea. Most of the time symptoms last a short while, but if they do not subside in a short time it is important they be evaluated by a veterinarian for dehydration. Severe dehydration has the potential to severely damage their internal organs, so be mindful of their drinking habits and make fresh water available at all times when at the beach.

Surf Dangers
Waves breaking in the surf can be dangerous to our smaller companions. Cresting waves can pack quite a punch and cause your pet to develop musculoskeletal injury or worse, drown. It is important to watch them closely at all times when they are in the water and do not allow them to swim too far from land. Rip currents, which are powerful underwater currents going out to sea are dangerous to humans and dogs. Make it a habit to know the current beach report before heading down to have some sandy fun.

The beach can be fun and rewarding for both pets and their owners. Towns and the Cape Hatteras National Seashore Recreational Area have their own restrictions pertaining to pets. Please be courteous and clean up after your pet. All pet waste must be collected immediately and deposited in appropriate containers.

Before traveling, ask your local veterinarian for a copy of your pet’s health and shot records

Have a proper identification tag affixed to your pet’s collar

Keep a current photograph of your pet with you

Stick a piece of adhesive tape to your pet’s collar with your name, local address and phone number

The following is written from the point of view of Jack Russel Terrier named Kalie:

So, I was with my master on the beach one day and bird, bird, bird, bird, bird, bird....sorry I got distracted. So I was on the beach one day and the weather was great, the water was warm and the sand was so easy to dig in. I had just settled down for a nap when I looked up briefly to see something strange off in the distance. Large, dark figures moving very slowly towards me. My ears perked up and my tail turned to vibrate mode....I could smell them now. As they got closer, I still had no idea what they were, so naturally I started to bark and run towards them without looking back. My mommy had me on a leash, but I managed to pull out of it with all my might...after all, I do weigh 11 pounds. I ran and ran and ran and could hear my owner yelling and running after me. I figured she was just as excited to see what they were as I was. Once I got close enough to make them out I stopped...but continued to bark. They seemed to be giant dogs with people on them. They must have been scared of me because they totally avoided me and I realized that I wouldn't have been able to reach their butts to sniff anyway. I heard my mommy say later that these big dogs were named "horse." I just wanted to be friends with them, but I guess I will have to wait until next time to introduce myself again.

The Outer Banks Dog Blog

Our first post! There are so many dog lovers on the Outer Banks that we decided it was time they had a place to send pictures and even "guest blog" on occasion.

Many visitors bring their pets on vacation with them each year, which is one reason we decided to build out a Pet Friendly OBX website showcasing only those homes that permit pets.

So, if you have a great pet photo or story please let us know. You can send those in to j@vrobx.com.

We are always looking for new photos for our website (including our blog) so go ahead and make your pet a Web Star!

This will be a great place to post information about pet friendly events, homes, venues and more on the OBX.

Of course for our first post we need to include some cute and funny pictures of our furry friends.
